Did anyone but me watch the Republican presidential debates? It seems unlikely. The fact that I did have them playing in the background while yelling at my six imaginary wives has had me questioning my own sanity. I only watched them so I could reminisce about 2016 and probably the most entertaining political time of the last half century. However it was clear from the start that these debates were missing a key character. Donald Trump really was the only thing that made the 2016 campaign great. Whether you loath or love him, it’s undeniable that he is a showman. I challenge anyone that rejects this to try and watch the newest Republican debates and see how far you can get through this punishment.
Every candidate but one was running on the campaign policy that they detest Trump. There really was no substance whatsoever except for their dislike for the main protagonist. Ironically, most of them had worked for and praised him previously. What little policy there was included just returning to a time before Trump existed. It was simply depressing to see that there was zero thought or innovation on how to improve the worst empire that’s ever existed. Trump is now the Republican Party and these people have to realize that destroying him is destroying their own base – I’m sure some of these candidates rejoice in this thought.
The one slightly interesting character was Vivek Ramaswamy because he didn’t complain about Trump for the full two hours. Rather than basing his campaign on time travelling to before the 2016 election, he actually wanted to build upon what the president had done. He also promoted ideas that are accepted within Republican supporters but hated by the mainstream media including how the January 6th insurrection was fake and how the Great Replacement is real. It’s obvious that as an ethnic Indian he is allowed more leeway in making these claims – the mainstream is still aware that calling an Indian a Nazi is just ridiculing themselves.
Of course Ramaswamy will go the same way as Andrew Yang and become a footnote to history. Has anyone even checked on Yang since the 2020 election? I smell something funky every time I walk past his house and I’m not sure if it’s the cooking or a decomposing corpse. Either way the result is the same; these candidates are all one time instances that will be erased as quickly as they appeared.
A few associates asked me about the Republican debates and who would be successful. I asked them if they watched and the answer was obviously no. However, they had seen the news and had some expectation that a challenger to Trump would actually exist. This is because the media refused to report on the specific polling numbers and instead framed it broadly with terms like ‘leading challenger’ and ‘gained in the polls’.
I’m starting to ramble and it’s just because there’s nothing else to discuss in relation to these debates. I’ve got a million and one critiques for Trump, but once you see how drab and evil the alternatives are: I simply become reminiscent of a more entertaining and beautiful time.
