It’s of course Mother’s Day in Australia, so I’m trying to be more empathetic than usual. I don’t really have much to say about this event, except to follow God’s fifth commandment which is to ‘honor your father and mother’. Even if we live messy lives, we are still blessed with the gift to exist and walk our own paths.
After a day of presents and fine dining, my mother sat down for her alcoholic beverage ritual. She soon received a call from a sibling making her alert to the many injured seagulls on the local road. This sibling than proceeded to ask for her to bring cardboard boxes and help: I likely didn’t receive a call because I have no regard for such matters.
However, it seemed cruel to let a drunken mum drive on Mother’s Day so I offered my assistance. I then found myself wandering the road helping a bunch of hippies pick up injured seagulls in the middle of the night. While doing this, I noticed a young girl who was standing around with her own mother. She looked towards us and asked a simple question “Why are you saving seagulls?”
I immediately thought that this kid has it worked out. Why are we wasting our precious time saving the most over populated species in existence? Saving seagulls is like saving ants – there’s really no point to it at all. The only explanation is that some people wish to stop the suffering in the world: which is a righteous yet somewhat pointless endeavor.
The other amusing thing is that a local zoo was contacted to come and pick up the injured birds. This had happened before and I was told that the seagulls rarely survive. Due to previous unassociated events, I’m aware that the local zoos adopt birds and other animals to feed to their carnivorous exhibits. So it is very likely that these injured seagulls are going straight into the meat grinder.
The entire event was as pointless as this article. Regardless I got a good laugh and made some ladies day by pretending to care for such a garbage animal. I guess that’s why we do lots of things in life, not because we value these actions but because someone else does.
