Deadpool & Wolverine – Movie Review [spoilers]

The truth about Deadpool is that we like the concept more than the execution.

This movie released recently and I said “finally a decent superhero movie”. Then I remembered that Deadpool 2 was terrible and the first movie wasn’t that great either. Comedy, ultra – violence and breaking the fourth wall sounds interesting. And it’s also a needed contrast to Disney’s existing child friendly superhero universe. However in reality comedy and violence are just components that cannot be a story on their own. And that’s what all these Deadpool movies are lacking, an interesting story.

The plot for these movies is almost identical to every other superhero movie. The basic plot for this one is villain plans to destroy Deadpool’s universe, Deadpool gets a supernatural friend Wolverine to help him, they fight one another while unable to defeat villain, they eventually unite and defeat villain to save the universe. It’s such a predictable plot, and adding comedy gaffes or violent action doesn’t change the level of predictability.

The character Deadpool doesn’t really change whatsoever across all movies. He begins this movie with his friends and ends successfully saving them. There was no conflict on an internal level. The film tells us that he struggles to be part of a team because he is loud and annoying, but we can see with our own eyes that he has many friends and he is the one that reaches out to Wolverine for an alliance. He really plays the annoying and loud sidekick, but given more airtime than he should have.

Wolverine may be the only saving grace to this movie. Wolverine was always the cool lone wolf in the Xmen series that never really wanted to be a hero. His own friends and family are destroyed while he is out getting drunk. Their ghosts now torment him and he lives in a state of regret. However, he is now provided a second chance to learn from the past, become a hero and save Deadpool’s universe. This was at least interesting; however Logan is a way better movie that deals with these themes.

From the beginning, they should have never made Deadpool a normal hero character that we’ve already seen a thousand times. This is a self – insert, but he should have been a vigilante gun for hire because he can do literally nothing else. He is cursed with immortality and apathetic towards the world that destroyed him. His response to his own suffering is to laugh through the pain. He therefore finds his purpose in destroying others goals, ridiculing everyone and everything in the process. My ideas are much closer to the comic version in contrast to the empathetic hero depicted in the movies.

Deadpool & Wolverine is an ok movie with great action scenes. The comedy is mixed and the story is lacking. The multiverse sucks and needs to stop, because it really is just a giant excuse for bad writing. Stating that there is an alternative dimension where the story is good, doesn’t mean your story is – it’s quite the opposite.
